Austria Travel: A peaceful country drive through rural Styria Sunday, April 3, 2011

Thisvideo clip was taken on July 31, 2007 during my trip to Austria, my home country. First I did some discoveries in my home town of Weiz: I explored the famous pilgrimage church called Weizbergkirche which was built in late baroque style and consecrated in 1776. What astounded me was the size and beauty of this church, considering that it serves a city of barely more than 9000 people. Then I moved on to another architectural gem in the Weiz area: Schloss Thannhausen or Thannhausen Castle was built in the 1500s and features a gorgeous Renaissance courtyard with three levels of arcades and is still often used for concerts and special events. After an interesting drive through the Weizklamm (Weiz Gorge) on a main road framed by vertical limestone cliffs that is so narrow that often it doesn't accommodate two cars side by side I arrived in the mountain village of St. Kathrein am Offenegg, a popular tourism destination with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. Then I explored another touristic highlight of the Weiz area: the "Katerloch", one of the largest limestone caves in Austria with a wide variety of dripstones, many of which are reminiscent of animals, human beings and other identifiable objects. The highlight of this cave is the so-called "Seenparadies", the "Lake Paradise", an underground lake located 135 metres below the cave entrance. I had a chance to interview the operator of the cave after visiting this underground wonderland and learning about the ...

WACHAU Austria Friday, March 25, 2011

As with almost anywhere within the Wachau, the clocks of the dreamy town of Stein seem to run a little slower than in other parts of Austria. Its well preserved ensemble of old houses is not uncommon and the Wachau region enjoys a good reputation for its fine historic treasures and elegant buildings. Krems is like a fairytale town. The wrought iron signs on its buildings and its wonderful historic atmosphere are truly captivating. The former stronghold and subsequent rival of Vienna contains several beautiful lanes and imposing buildings that reflect the wealth of its former citizens. Amid the vast terraces of the Wachau vineyards is the village of Weissenkirchen, in which several hospitable inns provide their customers with an ideal opportunity to sample the wines of this region. Wine growing has a long tradition in this section of the Danube and the area between Krems and Melk is one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in Austria. The Wachau is a landscape full of warmth as well as being steeped in history and age old traditions.

Beethoven Sonata Op.109 1st Mov. Dohnanyi Rec.1960 Sunday, March 20, 2011

Erno Dohnanyi was born in what was then Hungary,in 1877. He was a pupil of Istvan Thoman and Eugen d'Albert, both of whom had studied with Liszt. At the age of 18,he composed his Piano Quintet of which Brahms commented,"I couldn't have done better myself." It was Brahms who arranged for its first performance in Vienna in 1895. Not long therafter (around 1900), Dohnanyi became considered to be the greatest Hungarian pianist and composer since Liszt. Pianists of such stature as Josef Hofmann, attended his recitals and many of his compositions found their way into recitals and orchestral concerts. Dohnanyi's love of the music of Mozart,Beethoven and Brahms, was evident in his ealiest recitals and concerts. While many other pianits were playing solon type music and showy operatic transcriptions at the turn of the 20th century, Dohnanyi was playing Beethoven Sonatas and Mozart Concerto's. His 1928 recording of the Mozart Concerto in G K453, was for many years the only recorded version available. Dohnanyi conducted the orchestra from the piano. That was 80 years ago. Needless to say, he was highly criticized for doing so. However, unlike Schnabel, Dohnanayi also admired the music of composers such as Johann Strauss (as did Brahms) and Leo Delibes whose music he transcribed to play as bon bons to end his recitals. As a composer,Dohnanyi was a Romantic who had a great respect for classical form. He was very much influenced by the music of Johannes Brahms who, as mentioned earlier ...
